The Select Pools Process

Plan and Design

Each and every one of our pool designs is unique to the individual customer. We work one-on-one with every customer to determine their specific needs ensuring they receive the Select pool of their dreams, not ours.

We work with innovation in mind through each process of your project beginning with the presentation of design. To make sure you can access your design from anywhere, a page within our website will be created to showcase your backyard. We want you to showoff to your family, neighbors, and coworkers the design that you have created. Simply type the address into the browser of any internet-capable device and voila! There is no fumbling through emails for one or two pictures.

Each Select customer receives a 3D design created in-house with Pool Studio. You will find yourself immersed in the possibilities of your outdoor space true as possible to size, shape, and color.

As your design is unique, so too is your quote. Upon approval of design, you will receive an in-depth proposal detailing the features of your Backyard Escape.

We at Select Pools & Backyard Escapes build with the principle that every project is unique. Each and every backyard, or front in some cases, presents a unique set of opportunities to be tackled. We design, from scratch, for all of our customers a unique backyard solution to handle those unique opportunities. We are able to deliver a swimming pool and backyard tailored to the specific wants, needs and desires of each individual customer.

Construction

Excavation

The project truly begins to unfold as we break ground in your backyard. From the moment our tractors come off their trailers, we work cautiously to preserve any existing vegetation making sure no unnecessary marks are made on your property. Upon completion of “the dig,” the footprint of your pool is unmistakable.

Steel, Plumbing and Gunite

Our structure is engineered, our plumbing is out from beneath the weight of your swimming pool and our gunite offers the most consistency of strength possible.

Once the hole is in the ground, we begin constructing the bowl of your pool with steel using structural techniques approved by a state-licensed structural engineer. The steel used to create the skeleton of your pool is #4, 60-grade steel to create the most rigid structure as possible. We tie our steel with stainless steel ties at a maximum of 9” on-center-each-way in the walls and floor of your pool. This creates a web of steel with no larger than 8-½”x 8-½” spaces throughout the structure.

The structure of your pool is completed as we build the Structural Integrity Beam of your pool. We build strength into your pool by creating a double-layer of steel in an 8”-thick deck around the perimeter of your pool. The deck is supported every 18” with 45° support bars. The structural integrity of our design far outreaches the typical design of single-bar, 4”-thick decks in practice with other pool builders. We know we build the strongest pool in San Antonio.

With solid structure, comes well-planned plumbing. We plan the shortest route for plumbing to create the shortest runs as possible which maximizes efficiency of water flow. Instead of placing the entire weight of your swimming pool (thousands of pounds!) on top of PVC pipes not rated for that practice, we place your pipes beneath the deck of your pool. The 10’s of dollars a year you may save from straight runs beneath your structure is made up for in the 100’s of dollars a year we save you using our standard Pentair IntelliFlo Variable Speed pump. We program a specific RPM to your pump ensuring proper filtration while reducing your energy consumption by up to 90% versus competitor’s pumps!

The shape of your design is solidified as we gunite your swimming pool. We are a true gunite builder, not a shotcrete builder. The chemical process that occurs during the curing of concrete is paramount in creating a structure with uniform strength. This process with both gunite and shotcrete begins as soon as water is added to the dry mix. The process of curing with gunite does not begin until immediately prior to being shot into your pool on site creating a seamless pour with uniform strength throughout the structure. The process of curing with shotcrete begins as the concrete trucks receive water at the concrete plant. As the first truck begins to pour, the second, third, fourth and fifth sit in line baking in the sun curing at different rates than the concrete of the first truck. When the second truck begins to pour, there is a “cold joint” created between the concrete at different stages of curing. This process can lead to costly structural problems with your swimming pool as areas of uneven strength respond to pressures of moving soils differently.

Tile and Coping

We offer over 600 possible standard combinations of tile and coping to choose from at our showroom.

After gunite, the first signs of sparkle for your pool arrive as tile begins to be installed around your pool. We ensure that the tile is 100% and completely level at this stage creating an even reveal as water is added to you pool. We have available for your selection over 100 standard tiles selections to choose from and many more decorative tiles to make your pool stand out from the rest.

We only use the best materials to cope your swimming pool whether it be travertine, limestone, sandstone, quartzite, or manufactured materials. We source the hardest limestones and sandstones to ensure a long-lasting finish with minimal maintenance. Our craftsmen comb through the rock selecting only the finest to create a beautiful finish for your family to enjoy. We have a wide variety of finishes for you to choose from to accompany your tile in setting your swimming pool apart.

Final Stages

Plastering and Filling your Swimming Pool

We only use the best products and materials when it comes to your swimming pool. This philosophy holds true when it comes to our plaster as well. We use Diamond Brite, an exposed aggregate plaster from Southern Grouts and Mortar, to fulfill this promise. Unlike traditional marble plaster or competitor exposed aggregate plasters, Southern Grouts and Mortar products come premixed in bags to ensure color consistency and strength integrity. The polymer-infused plaster creates a more water-sealed finish ensuring longer lasting color and strength.

Diamond Brite is great on the feet as well! Compared to traditional smooth plaster, Diamond Brite eliminates slipping and the unbearable blisters that result from it. We encourage you to stop by our design center in flip-flops to test this phenomenon for yourself by walking on our submerged lounge.

Pentair Equipment

We use Pentair products exclusively to offer you the best for running, controlling, filtering, sanitizing, and cleaning your swimming pool.

It starts at the heart with your IntelliFlo 8-Speed Programmable Variable Speed pump. We are inflexible when it comes to the pump we provide for your swimming pool. We never use a single-speed or 2-speed pump to run your swimming pool. With the IntelliFlo, we are able to program the exact RPM required to run your pump to keep your pool at optimum cleanliness. We run your pump at a lower RPM over a bit longer period of time which dramatically reduces the amount of energy required to keep your pool safe for your family and friends to enjoy. Compared to competitors' single-speed, the IntelliFlo can typically save you up to 90% in energy consumption per year. The estimated savings are based on variable speed pump compared to a single-speed pump running 12 hours per day at an average of $0.16 per kWh in a 20,000 gallon pool. Actual savings may vary based on local utility rates, pool size, pump run time, pump horsepower, pump rpm, plumbing size and length, pump model, service factor and other hydraulic factors.

The brain of your pool is the EasyTouch Control Panel controlled wirelessly with ScreenLogic from your iOS or Android device. You will have total control of your pool from the pump to water features to your included IntelliBrite Multi-color LED Light. Out to dinner and want to get into your new spa as soon as you get home? No problem. Want to change the lighting of your pool to match the mood? No problem. Want to show of your water features to family and friends? No problem. Complete access and control of your swimming pool and spa from the palm of your hand.

To make sure your swimming pool feels as good as it looks, we offer standard for you a Pentair FNS D.E. Filter. We use Diatomaceous Earth standard because it offers the most to our customers in filtration going beyond the limits of typical paper filters or sand filters. Aiding in filtration in a Select pool is a Pentair Racer pressure cleaner. The four-wheel cleaner we offer standard on every swimming pool supplements your filter by removing unwanted leaves, twigs and dirt from the surface of your pool. We also include standard for sanitation an in-line chlorinator so you never see unsightly chlorine containers floating around your pool. With the ease of maintenance from our D.E. filter, Racer floor cleaner and in-line chlorinator, we hope to provide the cleanest swimming pool for you and your family.

You will know exactly how to operate and maintain the equipment we provide for your swimming pool as we go through an extensive pool school with every customer.

The Backyard Escape

We want to be your only stop for your complete Backyard Escape: pergolas, outdoor kitchens, outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, cabanas, we can do it all. With our extensive construction background, we are able to offer you services that no other company can offer. The quality found in our swimming pools cannot help but bleed into the construction of all components we build. We do not know how to offer anything less than the best for you and yours.

Your Family's Enjoyment

The pool is filled with water, the pump is running, and the time has come for us to leave you with one last thing: a future with many years of lasting joy with family and friends.
